It’s been a full three years since the mashup arcade puzzler Puyo Puyo Tetris originally launched in Japan, but, as of today, it is finally available in North America. Whereas the game was originally released for 3DS, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, and Xbox One in Japan, only the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 versions of the game made it to North America.
Puyo Puyo Tetris features a number of modes that make use of both Puyo Puyo and Tetris mechanics. There are simple Versus matches, with each player choosing to play either Puyo Puyo or Tetris. There’s Fusion Mode, which features Puyos and Tetrominoes on the same puzzle field. Swap challenges players to swap between a Puyo Puyo puzzle field and a Tetris puzzle field at set intervals. Big Bang is a “race to the finish” in which players attempt to “clear unique challenge boards” before their opponents. Party works like Versus, but with the added complexity of special items that can either help or harm the opponents of the player that activates said items. It also features charming characters, online play, a solo arcade mode, and an adventure mode that offers “unique challenges” on every stage.
Puyo Puyo Tetris is available now on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. The Nintendo Switch version is available digitally for $29.99 or as a physical copy for $39.99, whereas the PlayStation 4 version is only available as a physical copy for $29.99.
