Tencent’s insanely popular mobile MOBA, Honor of Kings, has been available in English exclusively in Europe for some time now. The European release of the game was previously named “Strike of Kings,” but Tencent announced today that the game has been rebranded “Arena of Valor,” perhaps in preparation for the global release scheduled for later this year. Fans seem understandably confused, as it seems that Tencent just can’t settle on a “<blank> of <blank>” name for the Western version of the game, but perhaps the new name will stick.
For those that haven’t heard of Arena of Valor, or the Chinese version Honor of Kings, it is essentially a mobile version of Riot Games’ popular PC MOBA League of Legends. The game has many parallels to the PC game, including basic gameplay and heroes. It is perhaps because of that, and Tencent’s involvement, that the game took off nearly immediately in China. Niko Partners previously reported that the game had garnered over 50 million daily active users by the end of 2016.
You can get an early look at Arena of Valor by watching the gameplay video embedded below. While I don’t have any experience with the Chinese version of the game myself, Niko Partners Analyst Daniel Ahmad noted on Twitter that several key changes have been made in order to appeal to Western audiences. Perhaps those of you who have played the Chinese version will be able to spot them.
