After wondering whether the excellent adventure series Life Is Strange would ever receive a sequel for quite some time, we finally received confirmation that a sequel would be happening last month. Well, it turns out that it’s not entirely a sequel. It was announced yesterday at E3 that the “sequel” is actually a three-part prequel called Life Is Strange: Before the Storm. It it, you play as Chloe, learning more about her friendship with Rachel Amber after her “world is turned upside down by a family secret.” The game is being developed by an independent developer called Deck Nine Games, rather than DONTNOD Entertainment, which developed the first game.
Square Enix London Studios Head of Studio Lee Singleton had the following to say about the announcement.
“LIFE IS STRANGE: BEFORE THE STORM is a key release for Square Enix this year and is being created as a direct response to fans asking to return to Arcadia Bay so they can revisit the characters they fell in love with. Many people can identify a particular person who significantly influenced their life; the person that ultimately shaped who they became. LIFE IS STRANGE: BEFORE THE STORM is about this exact moment.”
Deck Nine Games Vice President Jeff Litchford also provided a statement.
“The original LIFE IS STRANGE brought a new level of depth and real-world emotion to the narrative adventure game genre and holds a strong place in many people’s hearts, including our own. It’s an absolute privilege to work on the next game in the series and it’s our chance to do justice to the series and prove the quality of our unique StoryForge toolset from our very talented team.”
Life Is Strange: Before The Storm Episode One is set to be released on August 31st. Release dates for the other two episodes have yet to be announced, but you can already pre-order the entire season on Steam for $16.99.
