I just want to start this article out by saying that I am a huge fan of Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo and that I’ve played quite a lot of it. Kat and I have played an absurd amount of it in the versus mode. Normally, I’d be excited to hear about a new entry in the series.
Capcom announced today that a new mobile Puzzle Fighter game will be soft-launching on Android and iOS in “select countries” sometime soon, with a global release set to occur in “late 2017.” While only one player will be able to play on each device, the game will offer both single-player content and a real-time versus mode. Players will be able to play as various Street Fighter characters, Mega Man’s X, Darkstalkers’ Morrigan, Dead Rising’s Frank West, and more, as well as choose “two assist characters” that will “further enhance the abilities of the main character.”
There’s just one problem. Look at the characters. Gods, are they hideous. What have they done to them? The original’s character designs were drawn in a nice, charming chibi style. These designs seem to only barely resemble the characters in question.
Regardless, the game is set to launch later this year. You can get an early look at gameplay in the video embedded below.
